Why Sales?

Why Sales-01.jpg

The American dream. Rags to riches. A common reverie people fall into when tired, frustrated, or generally unhappy with their jobs. Especially if you’re in a job without much upward mobility or career expansion options. While there’s a myriad of creative ways to make your dreams a reality, a career in sales is one way to get things in motion relatively quickly.

Sales is the perfect combination of art and science. A salesperson must understand what the client wants and help them achieve it. Each day in sales, you experience tangible benefits of connecting people with products and services they need to succeed. You not only create your own American dream, but help others create theirs as well. It is a satisfying way to contribute to society, make a living, and become wealthy, all in one short lifetime.

What kind of person is a great fit for sales?

The perfect person for sales is someone who’s always learning, always growing, always evolving. It’s the elusive combination of an extrovert AND a good listener, who can hear what their clients need and make it happen. A successful salesperson is someone who likes to solve problems. Someone who likes to talk to people, meet new people, and appreciates the company of people in general. In sales, you must be flexible and able to work in the moment. You’re constantly creating checklists, challenging your assumptions, changing your tactics, and reevaluating your hypothesis.

Why it’s an amazing choice for career growth

A sales career is incredibly flexible. You’re often not bound to an office and have freedom of movement, as well as a fair amount of control over your own schedule. Personally, I love how quickly I was able to move up the pay scale. It’s a results-based career, and I enjoy seeing those results quickly. You can choose where you travel for work and for pleasure, and even have meetings in delicious restaurants of your own choosing. Being successful in sales has allowed me to earn multiple six figures without being in an office, and to me, that’s ideal.

Your journey into choosing sales

If you choose sales – remember it’s a journey, not a destination. While that one big sale that pays for all your children’s college education is a wonderful and lofty goal (that you should definitely aim for – it is possible!) most days are made up of the methodical grind, small steps towards your larger goal.

You must fall in love with the process, with the grind. Work to enjoy learning and keep your perspective in check. To the right salesperson, selling is never a chore.

Nor is it an easy career path – it requires self-exploration and an honest understanding of who you are and how you work – but it’s an incredibly rewarding one for the right person.

Diversity of opportunities/industries

One of the most amazing things about sales, is that you can sell anything. I don’t mean this in a cheesy salesman way that can con his client into buying things they don’t need. I mean that there are options for every kind of salesperson. Sell something you believe in. This is the key.

To expound upon this, I’ll reference an excellent article from Inc. “The root of quality selling must always be in having something valid, something true, something genuinely helpful to sell. If you don't have this, don't even begin to try to sell. If you try to sell that in which you have no passionate belief or something that is false, you are dead.”

Where it can take you in life

Literally everywhere.

With a start in sales, your future is wide open. Warren Buffet, Mark Cuban and Howard Schultz all started in sales. Entrepreneur Magazine asserts that “salespeople have what it takes to be great CEOs.” A sales career can be a launch pad for any future you can imagine.
